Water Wells

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is offering reduced water testing rates in observance of National Ground Water Awareness Week.  Between March 7 and 18, 2016, there will be reduced rates for private well owners.  During this time, the normal $18.00 analysis fee for testing of bacteria and nitrates will be reduced to $12.00.  Sterile test bottles and sampling instructions are available at the Lake County Central Permit Facility, 500 West Winchester Road, in Libertyville, at the main Health Department office, 3010 Grand Avenue in Waukegan, or at 16 separate township or municipal offices throughout Lake County. For a list of locations, call: (847) 377-8020. Water sampling kits can be mailed for $15.

About Us
Staff inspect and monitor private, semi-private and irrigation wells along with non-community water systems to protect groundwater from contamination and assure safe drinking water for citizens of Lake County in both incorporated and unincorporated areas. We also ensure minimum standards in the Well Code (Article XV) are enforced to determine the location, construction and modification of water wells, including closed loop geothermal wells, installation of water well pumps and related equipment.

We provide information about promoting and maintaining safe drinking water by consulting with well contractors, homeowners and environmental consultants. We also provide early assistance to help with projects such as a teardown/rebuild on a site with an existing water well. We respond to any water well related complaints including answering questions about water quality (bacteria, chemical, aesthetic issues), the well ordinance and permit fees.

New wells are inspected after installation and sampled prior to being placed into service. Abandoned wells are inspected to assure they are properly sealed to protect the aquifer.
